Faced with an inefficient workflow, a growing caseload, and a reliance on handwriting and visual matching, the Pathology laboratory at Henry Ford Hospital determined that it was critical to design and implement a barcode-based error-proofing system to positively identify its cassettes and slides.
How did they do it?
Read the just-published case study (PDF document) that details the challenges that Henry Ford’s Pathology lab faced, and how they worked with both General Data and their LIS provider to integrate ID/Positive barcode specimen identification and scanning technologies into their lab workflow. The case study includes an analysis of their “old” process, and shows how and where they improved it.
The results? Right now, they are seeing an 85% reduction in the number of intralab identification errors throughout the Hospital’s Pathology laboratory process. In addition, the process is saving the organization an estimated 2.67 FTEs per year. More results are detailed in the case study.
Congratulations to Drs. Zarbo, Tuthill, and the entire Pathology laboratory staff at Henry Ford Hospital.
